Back home/De regresso a casa

Everytime we go back to Portugal for a visit, my daughters love it. They enjoy being with the family (grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins), and they really feel at home in our house there. Even the cat (Xerxes) jumps with joy when we arrive. There's good things and bad things from moving to another country. Learning a new language is one of the good things; being far from family and friends is definitely the worst part of the whole experience. If we had moved to a more cosmopolitan city, with a greater mixture of cultures, may be it would be easier to make friends. But we live in a small city in Castilha La Mancha, and people are very much turned to themselves and families. They're note very used do deal with foreigners.

Cada vez que voltamos a Portugal para uma visita, as minhas filhas adoram-no. Gostam de estar com a família (avós, tias, tios, primos), e sentem-se bem na casa que mantemos lá. Até o gato (Xerxes) dá pulos de alegria quando chegamos. Há coisas boas e más quando se muda para outro País. Aprender uma nova língua é uma das boas; estar longe de família e amigos é, definitivamente, a pior parte de toda a experiência. Se tivéssemos mudado para uma cidade mais cosmopolita, com uma mistura maior de diferentes culturas, talvez fosse mais fácil fazer amigos. Mas vivemos numa pequena cidade de Castilha La Mancha, e as pessoas são muito viradas para si próprias e para as suas famílias. Não estão muito habituadas a lidar com estrangeiros.

A feira de arte de Madrid terminou segunda-feira. Deixem-me partilhar com vocês algumas das obras que chamaram a minha atenção (por várias razões), entre muitas, muitas, outras.

Los Papeles de Agua (Antonio Gala); Atonement (Ian McEwan); The End of the Affair (Graham Green); Death in Venice (Thomas Mann). What do these four novels have in common? Writers. The main characters are writers. Deyanira, Briony, Bendrix and Von Aschenbach. Why do novelists have the urge to write about people that do what they do? Los Papeles de Agua and Death in Venice share another peculiarity: they both take place in Venice. This italian city exerts tremendous fascination over writers. And now I recall another story that happens in Venice: Across the River and into the Trees, by Ernest Hemingway. These are great books that I read over and over and never get tired.

As personagens principais são escritores. Deyanira, Briony, Bendrix e Von Aschenbach. O que leva os romancistas a escrever sobre pessoas com o mesmo ofício que o seu?Los Papeles de Agua e Morte em Veneza têm ainda outra particularidade: passam-se ambos em Veneza. Esta cidade italiana excerce um enorme fascínio sobre os escritores. E de repente lembro-me de um outro livro cuja acção também decorre em Veneza: Na outra Margem, entre as Árvores, de Ernest Hemingway. Para mim são todos grandes livros, que leio e releio sem nunca me cansar.
